Welcome! Some of your team’s best gifts won’t come through a giving form — they’ll come from a phone call, where a constituent says “Just put it on my card right now.” MOTO (Mail Order / Telephone Order) lets your students process that gift on the spot, right from GC, without sending the donor to a checkout page or handing them off to someone else.
Your job as a manager is to get MOTO set up so your students can use it with confidence: make sure a card reader is registered, give the right students permission, point “Record a Gift” at the right giving form, and know enough about the flow to coach your team through it. This guide walks you through all of it — what has to be in place, what you set up, and how to support your students once they’re live.
What MOTO does for your engagement center
MOTO connects GC to a physical card reader (a Stripe Terminal device), so a student can take a credit card gift over the phone and have it recorded the moment it clears. For an engagement center, that means:
- Capture the gift in the moment. When a constituent is ready to give, your student processes the card right then — no “I’ll send you a link,” no lost momentum after a great conversation.
- It starts from the constituent. A student kicks off the gift from the Record a Gift button, with the constituent’s details already filled in.
- The donor’s info comes pre-filled. Name, email, and zip code carry over from the constituent record, so your students aren’t retyping what they already have.
Before you start: what has to be in place
MOTO only shows up when your school is set up for it, and a few of those pieces sit with GiveCampus or your GiveCampus admin, not in your manager settings. Confirm these three things first:
- MOTO is enabled for your school. MOTO is a product your school turns on, and it runs on Stripe as your payment processor. If it isn’t enabled, the MOTO tools stay hidden everywhere. GiveCampus sets this up.
- At least one card reader is registered. MOTO sends payments to a physical reader that has to be registered and nicknamed under School Settings → GC Admin → MOTO Device Management. With no device registered, there’s nothing to send a payment to. Registering a device requires the financial settings permission — so this is either you (if you have it) or your GiveCampus admin.
- The students who’ll process gifts have MOTO permission. Processing a payment requires the dedicated MOTO permission, granted at the team level. Without it, a student won’t see Record a Gift or Pay with Device.
If MOTO isn’t turned on for your school — or you’re not sure — reach out to your GiveCampus team or giftofficer@givecampus.com. Once it’s on, the setup below is yours to manage.
Set up MOTO as a manager
There are two setup steps: register your reader(s), grant permission, and connect “Record a Gift” to a giving form. You can also follow the instructions in the top half of this setup guide.
Step 1: Register and manage your card readers
This lives under School Settings → GC Admin → MOTO Device Management, on the Registered Devices page. (You’ll need the financial settings permission to see it — if you don’t, your GiveCampus admin can register devices for you.)
To register a new reader:
- Power on the reader and connect it to Wi-Fi. Once it’s connected, the device shows a 3-word pairing code on its screen. No code on screen? On the reader, swipe right from the left edge → Settings → enter Admin PIN 07139 → select Generate pairing code, then read the code off the screen.
- In MOTO Device Management, start a new device registration.
- Give the reader a nickname — make it unique and obvious (e.g., “Phonathon Station 3”). This is the name students pick from when they take a payment, so name it for where it physically sits.
- Enter the 3-word registration code from the device.
- Register Device.
The Registered Devices list shows each reader’s nickname, serial number, and who registered it, and lets you edit a nickname or delete a reader you’ve retired. You can search the list by nickname, serial number, or creator.
| Why nicknames matter: In a room with several readers, the nickname is how a student confirms they’re sending the payment to the device in front of them — not the one two seats over. Name them for their physical location and your students will never second-guess the dropdown. |
Step 2: Connect “Record a Gift” to a giving form
The last setup step lives under your gift officer settings — School Settings → GC Admin → Gift Officer settings → GC Connections — in the Record a Gift section. This is where you tell GC which giving form a MOTO gift should run through and who should have the ability to use the device.
You’ll see this section once three things are true: MOTO is enabled for your school, your school has MOTO access, and at least one device is registered. From there you can:
- Enable Record a Gift for a team.
- Choose the giving form each team uses for MOTO gifts (the Team and Form columns).

How your students use MOTO
You don’t have to build any of this — it’s the flow your students follow once you’ve set them up. Knowing it cold is what lets you coach the room.
- On the Home Page or in the Task click the Record a Gift button. GC opens a giving form with the donor’s name, email, and zip code already filled in.
- Fill in the gift details — amount, designation, and anything else the form requires.
- Click Admin Only: Pay with Device, below the standard checkout options.
- Choose the reader from the dropdown. GC remembers the last device used, so it’s usually already selected — but students should confirm the nickname matches the reader in front of them.
- Click Pay with Device. GC saves the donation and sends the payment to the reader.
- Enter in the card number. The student prompts donor to provide their credit card information.
- When it clears, the student sees Payment was Successful.
The gift is now recorded.
