The GC MOTO device is particularly beneficial for situations where credit card information is shared via mail or phone, making it an ideal tool for your gift entry team or call and engagement center on campus. By using this secure device, staff can confidently process donations and payments while safeguarding sensitive information, thereby enhancing both security and efficiency in transaction handling.
With its user-friendly interface and robust security features, GC MOTO helps streamline the payment process, allowing schools to focus on building relationships with donors without compromising on data protection.
Setting up your GC MOTO device and Getting Started
Once you’ve received your device(s) in the mail from GiveCampus, you can get started with setup.
In your box:
- Device
- USB power cord
- Battery
Step 1: Insert the battery pack into your device. To remove the back of the device, use the notch located in the bottom right corner.
Step 2: Go to Online Giving > School Level Settings > Registered Devices. If you don't see this option, contact support@givecampus.com to enable it.
Step 3: Enter a nickname for your device in the "Nickname" field. Turn on the device and input the registration code displayed on the device into the "Registration Code" field.
Step 4: Click “Register Device.” The device will appear in the table as a registered device. Repeat this process for each device. If you encounter a red banner error after clicking “Register Device,” contact support@givecampus.com with the error message for assistance.
How does this work?
Once your device is registered and paired (see instructions below), navigate to the Giving Form as if you were a donor. After the donor submits all pre-payment information, you will see an “Admin Only: Pay with Device” button at the bottom of the page.
PLEASE NOTE: You must be logged in as a GiveCampus admin.
Once you select the device, follow these prompts on the device screen, pressing NEXT after each step:
- Enter the card number
- Enter the expiration date
- Enter the CVC code
- Enter the zip code
- Confirm gift details
After the card information is submitted and approved, the gift will be processed, and your desktop screen will update to the post-payment form.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Does the device need to be connected to a WiFi network or through the included cable?
Yes, the device connects directly to Stripe via WiFi. The included cable is only for charging.
2. Is any card data sent from the device to GiveCampus?
No, card data is transmitted directly from the device to Stripe. GiveCampus receives only transaction confirmation from Stripe.
3. Is this available for Giving Forms and Social Fundraising?
Currently, GC MOTO is only available for Giving Forms.
Why doesn’t the "Admin Only: Pay with Device" button appear during a Giving Day?
GC MOTO works only with Giving Forms. If your school has redirected forms to a campaign page for Giving Day, the button won’t appear because the device requires direct access to the form.
How to use GC MOTO on a Giving Day
Temporarily disable the form redirect so you can load the Giving Form directly. Once you see the pre‑payment fields and are signed in as an admin, the "Admin Only: Pay with Device" button will appear at the bottom of the page.
Tip: Check that you’re on the Giving Form by navigating to its specific URL. If you’re rerouted to a campaign landing page, the redirect is still active.
4. Can I set up a recurring gift?
Yes, GC MOTO supports recurring gifts.
5. I see options to tap, swipe, or insert credit cards. Can I accept in-person gifts with this?
Although the device supports these features, our integration does not currently support in-person transactions.
How do administrators get access to GC Connect vs. GC MOTO?
GC Connect and GC MOTO are separate products with distinct access controls. GC Connect is an in‑person card‑reader product (tap/swipe/insert), while GC MOTO is a handheld device for keyed card entry. Enabling one does not automatically grant access to the other.
GC Connect access (per administrator)
- When your school has the Stripe Terminal (GC Connect) feature enabled, a column labeled GC Connect Access appears on the Online Giving > Administrators > Notifications page.
- In the table, locate the administrator's row and check the GC Connect Access box.
- Ensure the administrator has a Job Type assigned. A Job Type must be assigned before access is granted.
GC MOTO access (per administrator)
GC MOTO access is controlled by administrator roles such as Superadmin, Finance Admin, or School‑Level Settings Admin, as documented elsewhere in this article.
Key differences and considerations
- Visibility: The GC Connect Access checkbox is visible only when the Stripe Terminal (GC Connect) feature is enabled. If you do not see the column, confirm with your Partner Success Manager that the feature is active.
- Separate controls: The Gift Management Admin role or access to all campaigns and giving forms does not grant GC Connect access. The GC Connect Access checkbox must be checked and a Job Type assigned.
- Reporting: Both GC Connect and GC MOTO report terminal entry using the same reporting column ("terminal_type"). The value will be either null or a product identifier (for example, "gc_moto" for MOTO entries).
Quick checklist to enable GC Connect for an administrator
- Confirm that Stripe Terminal (GC Connect) is enabled for your school.
- Navigate to Online Giving > Administrators > Notifications.
- Locate the administrator's row and check GC Connect Access.
- Assign a Job Type if one is not already selected.
If you want an administrator to use GC MOTO without GC Connect, simply assign the appropriate admin role (Superadmin, Finance Admin, or School‑Level Settings Admin) without enabling the GC Connect Access checkbox.
For configurations that include both products, grant access for each independently: role assignments control GC MOTO access, while the GC Connect Access checkbox and Job Type assignment in the Notifications table control GC Connect access.
For PCI-compliant in-person gifts directly integrated with GiveCampus, consider our GC Connect devices. Contact your Partner Success Manager for more information.6. What reporting columns can I add to indicate if a gift was entered via MOTO?
Add the column 'terminal_type'. Values will be either null or “gc_moto”. Note: This column also applies if you use GC Connect.
7. Does GC MOTO Support P2PE (Point-to-Point Encryption)?
Yes, GC MOTO is configured to use Point-to-Point Encryption out of the box.
8. Do I need to be onboarded to Stripe as a payment processor to use this?
Yes, Stripe is required. The device cannot be used with TouchNet or Cybersource.
9. Are there specific administrator permissions required to enter gifts using this device?
Yes, only a Superadmin, a Finance Admin, or a School-Level Settings Admin administrators can enter gifts using the device.
10. How do I purchase a GC MOTO?
Contact your Partner Success Manager to discuss adding GC MOTO to your partnership.
11. I’m getting the error “Failed to fetch list of MOTO devices. Refresh the page and try again”
MOTO is only supported when using the givecampus.com URL of the giving form, not the branded URL. Use the URL https://www.givecampus.com/campaigns/[ID]/donations/new rather than https://give.school.edu/campaigns/[ID]/donations/new
Troubleshooting: WiFi connectivity issues
Basic device requirements
MOTO devices must connect to WiFi to communicate with Stripe. Without a network connection, transactions cannot be submitted.
Initial troubleshooting steps
- Ensure the device is charged and powered on. Remember, the included cable is only for charging.
- Confirm the device appears in Online Giving > School Level Settings > Registered Devices as registered.
- If the device once connected but now fails, restart the device.
- Test connectivity by connecting the device temporarily to a phone hotspot or a basic guest network.
-
MOTO requires WPA-Personal or WPA2-Personal encryption wifi networks and that must be password protected. MOTO does not support non-password-protected networks, enterprise networks, and IPV6 networks.
When to contact IT support
If the device still cannot connect after these steps, contact your IT team to review network settings such as configuration, authentication, and firewall rules. When reaching out, provide:
- The device nickname as shown in Registered Devices
- Any error messages displayed on the device
- Results from the hotspot or guest network test
If issues persist after these steps, work with your campus IT team for further network-level troubleshooting.
