For school administrators using GiveCampus Outreach. Controls can differ between the classic email editor and the newer Composer editor.
In an existing outreach, open Recipients. The source chips identify included audiences; Last Updated and Refresh Recipients are separate from searching the displayed list. View sources on a person helps identify why that recipient is included. Send a test email to yourself using this constituent's data tests a specific recipient's personalization; it is a send action, not a passive preview.
Add Recipients and Exclude Recipients each offer an existing segment or uploaded list. The segment-type menu includes Campaign, Giving Form, Event, Custom Segment, Pre-built Segment and Smart Segment. Direct email recipient CSV instructions require external_id, first_name, last_name, email_address and use the custom_ naming convention for supported custom-token columns. Check the actual upload workflow; the exclusion CSV has different required columns.
Under Outreach → Segments, choose Custom, Pre-Built or Smart. New Segment offers starting from an existing segment, uploading people, or building a new segment. Creating a new built segment requires a name and creates a record before later editing; it is not merely a filter preview. An empty dynamic pre-built segment displayed This Segment has no people yet, offered Refresh Segment, and disabled search, filters, download and Create Outreach. That empty state alone is not proof of a permission failure. Refresh and inspect completed membership before relying on a population count.
No segment or recipients were created, refreshed, excluded, uploaded or sent to.
