For the established (legacy) Volunteer Management portal. These steps differ from the newer Volunteer Management interface. Administrator controls require the appropriate school or volunteer-management permissions.
Before changing a daily constituent feed, identify whether it uses the established VMS importer or a newer person-data import/synchronization path. Their blank-value behavior is not interchangeable.
In the established VMS importer, blank cells can be skipped when the constituent record is updated. An empty, unquoted CSV cell can therefore leave the previously stored email unchanged. A quoted empty string, validation rule, transformation or alternate source can behave differently; do not recommend a quoting trick as a tested deletion procedure. Omitting a column or a constituent row is also not a universal email-clear operation.
The newer person-to-VMS sync gathers active email-address records and can fall back to CRM preferred, business and other email values. Removing one incoming preferred address does not prove every reachable email source has been removed. Check the exact mapping, active address records, import result and resulting VMS record, including alternate addresses.
For a do-not-email requirement, ask the integration/support owner to establish and test the supported restriction/suppression mapping for that school. Verify a representative restricted constituent after import and in the volunteer recipient/compose flow before applying the change broadly. Support cannot promise the absence of cached/alternate data, prevent all external email use, or certify a particular account's solicitation behavior.
