Covering payment processing fees is optional. A donor can leave the box unchecked or clear it before submitting to give only the original gift amount. Opt Out means the box starts checked; it does not mean the fee is required.
What donors see and how the amount is calculated
The checkbox says “I would like to donate an additional $X.XX to cover transaction fees.” The dollar amount updates as the donor changes the gift amount. Checking it adds that amount to the gift; unchecking it sets the additional coverage to zero.
For the standard 3.2% configuration, multiply the base gift by 0.032 and round up to the next cent. A $100 gift adds $3.20, for a $103.20 total. A $101 gift adds $3.24, for a $104.24 total. A larger gift naturally produces a larger optional amount. This is the donor-coverage calculation, not a promise that the institution's actual processing charge on every transaction is exactly 3.2%.
DAFpay has a separate whole-dollar rounding step. All current DAFpay gifts support fee coverage; see DAFpay rounding before explaining a change in its final amount.
Can we customize the checkbox or require coverage?
The fee checkbox has fixed platform text and is not a Form Builder help-text field. The donor-covered-fee settings offer enable/disable and Opt In/Opt Out, not a custom checkbox sentence or percentage field. Keep coverage optional. For additional explanation, open the campaign or form's Giving Experience → Form Builder and add a separate Form Text field near the relevant part of checkout; do not describe this as editing the fee checkbox itself.
Where can an administrator see the fee?
Open Online Giving → Manage Gifts → Donations, locate the gift and click its Donation ID. A gift with coverage shows Payment Processing Fee in its payment information. Recurring gift details distinguish the per-installment fee. The standard donation/receipt email breakdown also includes a Payment Processing Fee line when coverage is present; a customized email may use different content.
