Update Constituent ID is a lookup, not a free-text gift field

These steps are for administrators with permission to manage gifts.

The donation screen's Update Constituent ID action explicitly attempts to set the ID from the gift's payer email. It is not an input for typing an arbitrary ID into that gift. If the school has no appropriate mapping, review the authorized Constituent Identifiers workflow to add/correct the email-to-ID mapping, then recheck the gift. A missing mapping and a wrong donor email require different corrections. Do not change a donor email merely to force another constituent's match.
