When using Stripe, GiveCampus partners can accept donations from any supported region. The donation will be made in your default currency and the conversion for the donor’s home currency will happen within their payment method before depositing to your bank account.
How donor currency conversion works
Donors pay in your school’s deposit currency. If a donor’s card or bank uses a different currency, the conversion is handled by their card issuer or payment provider before the funds are deposited to your Stripe account. Neither GiveCampus nor Stripe converts the donation currency during the giving flow.
Your school receives deposits in the currency set in your Stripe account configuration. This deposit currency is determined by the country selected when the account is created. Supported currencies include USD, CAD, GBP and others available in your country.
Bank account and payout notes
Stripe supports bank account setups for either a U.S. or Canadian bank account (with a routing number) or an IBAN, which does not require a routing number. For Canadian accounts, the routing number is composed of a 5-digit transit number followed by a 3-digit institution number.
Ensure the bank account you connect accepts the deposit currency used in your Stripe account.
Add the Country field to your pre‑payment address block
Collecting the donor’s country on the pre‑payment page ensures that donors can enter an international billing address and that the form behaves correctly regarding State/Province requirements.
To add the Country field:
- Open your giving form’s address settings on the pre‑payment (billing/address) step.
- Enable the Country field and position it at the top of the address block.
- Save or publish your form.
When a donor selects a non‑US country, the State/Province field automatically hides, allowing the donor to complete the form even if State is marked as required.
Settings and availability
There is no separate setting for international donations. If your giving form is public and your Stripe account is connected, donors in supported regions can give using your form.
International payments depend on Stripe’s supported payment methods and the donor’s issuing bank. As long as Stripe supports the donor’s country and the donor’s card or bank authorizes a payment in your deposit currency, the donation will process normally.
FAQ
Can donors give in any currency?
Donors are charged in your school’s deposit currency. Their card or bank converts the charge to that currency and may apply exchange fees.
Are all currencies accepted as deposit currencies for my school?
The available deposit currencies depend on the country selected during Stripe account setup. Common deposit currencies include USD, CAD, and GBP, but the full list is determined by Stripe for your country.
Do I need to enable anything in GiveCampus to accept international donations?
No additional settings are needed. As long as your form is public and your Stripe account is configured, international donors in supported regions can give.
What should I consider regarding bank accounts and payouts for international gifts?
Use a bank account that accepts your Stripe deposit currency. Stripe supports U.S. or Canadian bank accounts (with a routing number) and IBAN accounts. For Canadian accounts, routing numbers require a 5-digit transit number followed by a 3-digit institution number. Make sure your bank details match your Stripe payout settings.
A donor from outside the U.S. reported that the form requested a State and wouldn’t submit. How do I fix this?
Make sure your giving form’s address block includes the Country field at the top. When a donor selects a non‑US country, the State/Province field automatically hides.
Can I change my deposit currency in GiveCampus?
The deposit currency is set when your Stripe account is created based on your school’s country. To change it, please consult with your GiveCampus account team.
To allow for international addresses on the prepayment form, just include the Country field as part of the address block. When a non-US country is selected the State field will automatically hide so that the form can be submitted even if State is a required field. We recommend placing the Country field at the top of the address block for the most seamless donor experience.
