Follow the Fund Matches: Understanding Fund Allocation
When a "Follow the Fund" match is set to fully unlock at campaign close but the match criteria aren't fully met, remaining match dollars become undesignated when the campaign ends.
Why This Happens
"Follow the Fund" matches distribute funds proportionally based on where donors actually gave. If the match isn't fully triggered:
- The system cannot determine the intended fund allocation
- Remaining funds default to undesignated status
Alternative Approaches
For Single-Designation Matches
If your match is intended for one specific designation, use a regular match instead:
- Set up a standard match directed to your specific designation
- Configure where remaining funds should go if the match isn't fully met
- This gives you control over fund allocation
For Multi-Designation Scenarios
Follow the Fund is best when:
- You want funds distributed based on actual donor preferences
- Multiple designations are involved
- You're comfortable with proportional distribution
Regular matches are better when:
- You have a single target designation
- You want to specify exactly where unused funds go
- You need predictable fund allocation
Planning Your Match Setup
Before creating any match, consider:
- Will this match likely be fully met?
- Where should unused funds go if it's not met?
- Do I need proportional distribution or targeted allocation?
