There's a couple of reasons your affiliations might not add up to 100% in the donors section of your campaign:
1) These are calculated by comparing the gifts raised by that affiliation compared to the campaign total. If a donor doesn't select an affiliation then the total will be higher than the sum of the affiliations and won't total 100%.
2) A donor can select multiple affiliations--this will add their donation to multiple affiliations but only once to the total, leading to affiliation counts higher than 100%.
3) Challenges count toward the numerator but not the denominator for these affiliation breakdowns. The idea is that if the challenge isn't successful, a person staking a challenge won't actually become a donor, but it's still nice to show their support within the affiliation section.
4) Offline adjustments to affiliations from Campaign Settings-> Offline Gifts-> Adjust Class Year & Affiliation Data will increase affiliation contributions but not the campaign totals which can also impact percentages.
This is most obvious early in the campaign and can make the percentages look a bit funny. Our best advice is to wait until there's more activity in the campaign, as the numbers will even out over time.
Common Reasons This Happens
1. Offline Gifts Were Added (Most Common)
If you added offline gifts and removed those donors from the campaign’s overall donor total — but did not also remove them from the affiliation count — the affiliation percentage can exceed 100%.
This often happens when:
- You want a donor’s name displayed on the campaign
- But you do not want them counted toward the campaign donor total
How to Fix It
To adjust the affiliation count:
- Go to Campaign Settings
- Select Manage Donations
- Click Offline Gifts
- Enter a negative number in the appropriate affiliation row to reduce the affiliation donor count
This keeps your affiliation totals aligned with your campaign donor total.
2. Offline Matches or Challenges Were Created
On new campaigns, this can also happen if you’ve created:
- Offline Matches
- Offline Challenges
These count toward the affiliation donor total immediately — but they do not count toward the overall campaign donor total right away.
Specifically
- Matches count toward total donors only after they match their first gift.
- Challenges count toward total donors only once the challenge is completed.
This situation is usually temporary and resolves automatically as gifts are received.
