How does GiveCampus connect with OpenAI?
- GiveCampus leverages a secure connection with OpenAI and passes data through OpenAI’s enterprise API, which is encrypted in transit using TLS 1.2 or later (read production notes on GPT actions to learn more).
- GiveCampus only sends data to OpenAI when explicitly asked to do so by the user, such as to generate an advanced donor bio in GC Gift Officer or to create a draft communication in GC Outreach. Additional capabilities will be introduced across the platform over time.
- When users request the use of AI, relevant details are passed to OpenAI via an API connection to develop the output. OpenAI returns the formatted output.
- GiveCampus stores data provided for the requested output, along with the output itself.
Does OpenAI store data and use it to train its models?
No. GiveCampus leverages a unique relationship with OpenAI that includes Zero-Data Retention (ZDR) for relevant endpoints as described in OpenAI’s Enterprise privacy statement and in the How we use your data section of their documentation models. All endpoints GiveCampus uses are covered by Zero Data Retention. This means OpenAI does not retain the data GiveCampus passes through except if required by law. Additionally, OpenAI does not train the AI based on information passed through these endpoints. These links also contain information about ownership, control, SOC 2 compliance, and data encryption.
What Data is Passed to OpenAI? As an additional security precaution, GiveCampus passes the “minimum” information to OpenAI for each request. Across our platform, we clearly indicate when information will be passed through for Generative AI. Here are a few examples:
For GC Outreach
- We only pass information that is entered by the user on AI content generation screens (e.g. communication type, outreach type, the public information about a campaign/giving form/event, outreach tone, the prompt entered into the text box, and the summary of who the recipient list will be (e.g., alumni, should-be donors, etc). No constituent personal identifiable information (PII) or giving information is passed through OpenAI to generate content.
For GC Gift Officer
- Contact reports, templates, tasks: Only the name of the user creating the report and the content that the user enters by typing or using text-to-voice to capture meeting details is passed to Open AI. GiveCampus does not send constituent data with contact reports.
- Email Outreach: GiveCampus passes instructions and prompts for creating the email to Open AI, along with basic constituent data such as name, class year, employer, title, and lifetime giving. GiveCampus also modifies the email output to include constituent details as needed, such as most recent gift or gift designation.
- Advanced donor bios: GiveCampus shares constituent biographical details as well as prior contact reports. We may also pass wealth/career data if available. Over time we may expand this to include additional external data sources or other information institutions include alongside constituent data, such as recent event attendance, if not captured as part of contact reports. At this time, we append all giving history information to the bio after it has been generated using AI, meaning gift data is not passed to OpenAI except if it is included in prior contact reports on the constituent record
