How to Create Autofill Links
Autofill links provide the ability to make the giving experience easier for donors by pre-populating fields on your Giving Form with information or inputs which you determine. Auto-fill links can come in handy for a variety of use-cases, from phonathon integrations to pre-populated website links. For highly personalized giving experience, check out the Personalization feature.
Creating an Autofill Link
Go to the Tracking & Analytics > Links & Appeal Codes tab with your Giving Form's settings and scroll down to the "Generate Autofill Links" section:
- Select the pre-form field you would like to auto-fill (i.e. payer_name).
- If you are autofilling a text field write in the information you'd like to include in this form (i.e. John Donor).
- If you are autofilling a checkbox field, use "true" to check the box or "false" to leave it unchecked.
- Click "Generate Link" to create your custom URL.
Common Autofill Parameters
Amount/Value
To pre-populate a specific dollar amount:https://yourschool.edu/campaigns/12345/donations/new?value=85
Note: The parameter is called "value" not "amount" in the URL structure.
Recurring Gifts
To pre-select the recurring gift option:https://yourschool.edu/campaigns/12345/donations/new?value=85&recurring=true
Multiple Parameters
Combine multiple autofill parameters using the "&" symbol:https://yourschool.edu/campaigns/12345/donations/new?value=85&recurring=true&payer_name=John%20Smith
Common Variations of This Question
- How do I pre-populate gift amounts?
- Can I make a link that pre-selects recurring giving?
- How to create personalized donation links?
- What parameters work in donation URLs?
- How to autofill recurring checkbox?
Troubleshooting
Link doesn't work: Make sure you're using the correct parameter names ("value" for amounts, "recurring=true" for recurring gifts).
Special characters: Use URL encoding for special characters (spaces become %20, etc.).
Multiple parameters: Always separate parameters with "&" after the initial "?".
Designation search field: why you may see "no results"
The designation control in the Generate Autofill Links section is a search input, not a dropdown. It displays the placeholder text "Search designations." Type part of the designation name into the field to find it—the list does not automatically drop open.
How the search works
- The search accepts partial text matches. Typing a fragment of a designation (such as part of a fund name) will display matching designations.
- Only designations attached to the current giving form or campaign will appear. If a designation exists only at the school level and hasn’t been added to the form or campaign, it won’t be found.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm you are in the Generate Autofill Links section (Online Giving > Campaign Tracking And Analytics).
- Click the designation search box and type the designation name. You should see "Search designations" as the placeholder text.
- Try using a partial match if the full name returns no results.
- Verify in your form's designation settings that the designation is attached to the form or campaign.
Tip: If the designation was recently added, try entering a short, unique fragment of its name to locate it quickly.
