If you do not set up custom email templates, then your donors will receive generic default GiveCampus notifications. Below are examples of some of these standard notifications.
Best Practice Alert! It is best practice create custom email templates for both regular gift notifications as well as recurring gift emails.
On the Social Fundraising Platform, you should set up custom email templates for your campaign backup form as well as each campaign.
If you are leveraging Giving Forms by GiveCampus, you should also set up custom email templates for each giving form.
Messaging that is more personal to your institution will help create a more meaningful donor experience, so we encourage you to set up these custom emails as a part of communications and donor stewardship activities! To learn how to set up your custom email templates, click here.

Recurring Gift template name and default content
The recurring gift setup notification template now appears as "Recurring Gift Set Up Notification" in your email templates list. Previously labeled as "Recurring Gift Receipt," this update clarifies that the email confirms the setup rather than serving as a tax receipt.
Default template content change
- The default template no longer includes the sentence “Below, you will also find a tax receipt.” The $TAX_RECEIPT$ merge token has been removed, so the message now only confirms the recurring gift setup.
- Custom templates you previously saved remain unchanged.
If you want tax receipt information in the setup notification, modify your template and insert the $TAX_RECEIPT$ token where desired.
Token resolution for "Recurring Gift Updated" emails
When a "Recurring Gift Updated" email is sent for a specific installment (for example, when an installment is processed live or when an admin re-sends a single installment email), donation-level tokens resolve to that installment. For instance:
- $DONATION_ID$
- $DONATION_AMT$
- $DONATION_DATE$
Subscription-level tokens, such as $RECURRING_TOTAL_PAID$, continue to summarize the full recurring subscription.
Why this matters
- Donors will no longer receive tax receipt text in the setup notification unless you add the $TAX_RECEIPT$ token.
- Updated token behavior for installment-specific notifications improves clarity for both donors and record keeping.

Recurring Gift Card Expiration Notice
Note: This is an automated email sent from GiveCampus and cannot be customized.
For schools leveraging Stripe, we are able to detect if a donor's credit/debit card is set to expire in the coming month. Often, Stripe will even recognize that a new card with an updated expiration has been issued to the donor, and automatically updates the donor's payment information so that the recurring gift continues to run smoothly without interruption. This has enabled our Partners to achieve tremendous success as they continue to receive thousands of dollars in recurring gifts with no action required on behalf of the school or the donor.
In the event that the donor's new credit/debit card information is not able to be automatically recognized, your donors will receive the "Recurring Gift Card Expiration Notice" (see image below). This is an automated email from GiveCampus to remind the donor to update their card information and provides them with a link to do so. Should the donor not update their payment information before their card expires, the recurring gift will fail when the next installment attempts to charge their card. The donor will then receive the "Recurring Gift Card Expired" email, which can be customized through the "Recurring Gift Card Expired" email template for your campaign, giving form, and/or standalone giving form.
