Matches and Challenges
Matches and challenges are powerful tools to incentivize donors and create excitement around your campaign. This guide covers how to create, edit, and track these motivational features.
What are Matches and Challenges?
Matches unlock additional funds when certain criteria are met (like reaching a number of donors or dollar amount).
Challenges work similarly but are often framed as goals to achieve rather than funds to unlock.
Creating Matches and Challenges
Setting Up Online Matches
- Match — additional funds unlock when donors meet a criterion
- Challenge – Basic — a collective goal for donors
- Challenge – Winner Takes All — designations compete, with the winner receiving the funds

Editing Matches and Challenges
Important Limitations
- Online matches that are complete cannot be edited or reset
- Once an online match has been fully unlocked, no changes can be made to its criteria or amount
- If you need to modify a completed online match, you'll need to refund it and have the donor create a new one
Editing Offline Matches
You can edit offline matches even after they're created:Editing Class Year Ranges
For offline matches, you can add multiple class years:Multi-Class Matches
Can a match cover multiple classes?
Yes! For offline matches and challenges, you can:Tracking Match Results
Viewing Match Performance
To see how your matches performed:Understanding "Will Give Amount Anyway" Matches
If you selected "will give amount anyway" when creating a match:- The amount offered equals the amount given for all matches
- You can still track participation through the match reports
- The download report shows dollars matched by the challenge
Matches in Campaign Totals
- Offline matches and challenges automatically add to campaign totals
- Offline matches incrementally add dollars as they're unlocked
- Offline challenges add their full amount when the challenge succeeds
- No additional adjustments are required
Common Questions
What happens when I edit a match?
The "If my match is not completely met, I will still give the full amount" option must be chosen when you first create the match. This setting cannot be changed after creation - you'd need to recreate the match to adjust it.Can I see this setting after creating a match?
There isn't a way to view or edit the "full amount anyway" option after the match is created. What if I need to reset a completed online match?
Completed online matches cannot be reset. Your options are:- Move the match to another campaign
- Refund the original match and have the donor create a new one
- Create an offline match instead
